JAMA Psychiatry Study Highlights Ultra high-risk (UHR) patients with schizophrenia appear to be at long-term risk for psychotic disorder, with the highest risk during the first two years after entry to a specialist clinic according to a study by Barnaby Nelson, Ph.D., of the University of Melbourne, Australia. The study included 416 UHR patients in a follow-up of a group of UHR patients who were recruited to participate in research studies between 1993 and 2006. Researchers assessed the transition to psychotic disorder in UHR patients up to 15 years after study entry...

Penguins-bruins

Nothing like a good ‘ole hockey rivalry — on and off the ice.

The Boston Bruins beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-1 in Game 2 and took a commanding lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. Fans in Beantown have a lot to celebrate, and they certainly want Pittsburgh supporters to know it. After the win, a few Bruins fans called a Pittsburgh sports bar and asked for "Owen," and hilarity ensued.

Though it might seem a little pompous, it’s a clever prank that will surely keep fans of both sides clashing heads as the teams prepare for Game 3

Watch the video above, and then let us know in the comments below — did you think the prank was clever? Did it cross the line? Read more...

E3 2013 is still a few days away, but that’s not going to stop Sony from releasing a few trailers of the game it intends to show off at the event.

The first of undoubtedly many is the super charming Puppeteer. The platformer from Sony Japan Studio has been high on my list of most anticipated games of 2013 since it was first announced last year, and we’re almost closing in on its September release date.

As for the trailer, it introduces some new gameplay mechanics as well as some new bosses. Check it out:

Sony is likely to show off some more PS3 games before its official presence at E3 so it can make plenty of room for the PS4. That’s only a good thing, though, as it gives us an even earlier look at what the PS3′s last major year holds in store for us.

Puppeteer will be available exclusively for the PS3 on September 10. To sweeten the deal, the title will only retail for $40.

A woman who lied about finding a finger in her bowl of Wendy’s chili is going back to prison after telling another big fat lie.

Anna Ayala apparently didn’t learn her lesson the first time she lied, even though it got her four years behind bars. This time around, she’s pleading no contest to felony charges stemming from an incident involving her son. She told authorities he was shot in the ankle by two men, but it turns out he accidentally shot himself and had Mom cover for him to avoid being busted for possession of a firearm while on parole. Ayala will receive a two-year prison term in September rather than the four years she might have gotten had she not fessed up early, saving San Jose a lot of money on a trial.

“I understand where the judge is coming from, but I respectfully disagree,” prosecutor Bret Wasley said. “Four years would have been reasonable since she has a history of manipulating the system.”

Ayala is serving time for now with her son, Guadalupe “Junior” Reyes, who was busted anyway for being untruthful about what really happened during the shooting. According to authorities, he blamed two men he had beef with.

Anonymous-turkey

The hacktivist collective Anonymous pledged to support protesters in Turkey by attacking "every Internet and communication asset of the Turkish government." Now they've been joined in their fight by another infamous group of hackers, the Syrian Electronic Army

On Wednesday, both groups scored their first significant victories, successfully hacking two different government networks, and getting access to sensitive data pertaining to Turkish officials

Through a phishing attack, Anonymous got its hands on the email accounts, passwords and phone numbers of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his staff, hacking his official website basbakanlik.gov.tr, according to the hacktivists' press release. A government official confirmed the breach to Reuters. Read more...

Cody-the-screaming-dog

You've probably heard a plethora of screaming goats, but now here's Cody the screaming dog, putting them all to shame. At first we thought this couldn't be real, but this happy pup seems to delight in making the most human-sounding noises we've ever heard coming out of the mouth of a dog.

Encouraged to vocalize by his nurturing master, Cody's howling instinct kicks into high gear, emitting a noise that will wake the dead and scare the neighbors. Be sure to warn them no one is in distress here — it's just Cody, the screaming dog.

Is Cody suffering? Judging from his tail that's obviously in continuous wagging mode, no. As a dog owner who was once lucky enough to be friends with a dog who instinctively howled when hearing the sound of a harmonica, I often wondered if dogs' howling was a sign of ear pain. But my dog seemed to delight in the harmonica sessions, and he'd be demonstrably disappointed when I'd put the harp back in my pocket Read more...

Thunderbolt

After previewing the next-generation of Thunderbolt at the NAB Show 2013 back in April, Intel officially announced the new version, dubbed Thunderbolt 2.

The original Thunderbolt — which Intel developed with Apple and released in 2011 — is a high-speed connection standard that offers transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps. That makes it faster than the far more ubiquitous USB-3 and ideal for data-intensive tasks such as video editing.

Adoption of the technology has happened relatively slowly (aside from Apple, of course), and accessories are finally starting to hit the market at competitive price points. So does Thunderbolt have a future? Read more...

Parenting

How much do parents know about their kids' Internet activity? Not much, according to a new study from McAfee that shows parents really don’t know what their kids are up to online.

What's even more telling is that 46% of youth acknowledged they would change their behavior if they knew their parents were paying attention. Parents, however, are far from paying attention. In fact, the study says 74% of parents surveyed don’t keep up with their kids' online behavior and hope for the best.

There are a few parents though who do take advantage of password protection of sites and apps, but kids most often take advantage of their parents' lack of tech knowledge. Almost all of the kids who had passwords set on mobile apps knew those passwords. Read more...

Tweetdeck-composite

Twitter was true to its word: It didn't shut down TweetDeck as many feared it would. (Well, at least not the desktop version). But it has continued to improve and enhance the Twitter dashboard since acquiring it in 2011. And now, it's given the pro tool its most significant interface update in years.

Visually, the change is stunning. Since its early beta versions, TweetDeck has been a dark tool, with a mostly black interface and white knockout text. The new TweetDeck is awash in white, resembling dashboard competitors likeHootsuite and SocialFlow.

The near-complete fossil of a tiny creature unearthed in China in 2002 has bolstered the idea that the anthropoid group of primates -- whose modern-day members include monkeys, apes and humans -- had appeared by at least 55 million years ago. The fossil primate does not belong to that lineage, however: it is thought to be the earliest-discovered ancestor of small tree-dwelling primates called tarsiers, showing that even at this early time, the tarsier and anthropoid groups had split apart.

Kim Zolciak of “Real Housewives Of Atlanta” fame is now pregnant with her fifth child…just nine months after her son was born.

Zolciak, who is married to Atlanta Falcons defensive end Kroy Biermann, also has a 2-year old son and two older daughters from a previous marriage. A friend says she wants to add some more estrogen to the household, however.

“Kim loves being pregnant,” a source said. “She really wants a little girl.”

The reality star never said she was done after son Kash was born; in fact, she said there would probably be more kids in her future even though a few years ago she never would have believed it.

“We’re not done,” she said. “I think we’ll have one more. We’ll see. When people [used to tell me] they had four kids, I’d be like, ‘Four kids! Whoa!’ And now that’s me. Who would’ve thought?”

Luckily for her, she seems to have a body meant for childbearing; the 35-year old tweeted photos of herself doing post-baby workouts last year and was back to her old self.

Prasad Kaipa and Navi Radjou, authors of leadership advice book “From Smart to Wise: Acting and Leading with Wisdom,” recently participated in an At Google talk, which Google has now made available for viewing.

To give you an idea of what your’e in for, it’s described as follows:

Leaders tend to obstinately stick to the leadership style that brought them most success in the past, usually one of two extreme styles: functional leadership that focuses on operational excellence or smart leadership that focuses on growth. When a leader’s focus is too functional, the organization becomes introverted and can focus too much on bottom-line profitability while missing out on top-line growth opportunities. But when leaders focus too much on smart leadership, the organization may experience quick growth but lose its effectiveness quickly.

From Smart to Wise offers a new approach that balances the two styles to achieve a form of wise leadership that is both functional and smart. Drawing on inspiring real-life stories of historical and contemporary wise leaders such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and even Mahatma Gandhi, the authors identify six characteristics of wise leaders and offer a practical framework to help readers develop their own style of wise leadership.

Kaipa and Radjou have conduct numerous keynote speeches and workshops each year.

NAIROBI, Kenya -- An elephant orphanage in Kenya is seeing an upsurge in orphaned elephants brought there because of the poaching crisis occurring across Africa, the founder said Wednesday.

Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who runs the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi National Park, said Kenya must pass stricter laws to punish those who poach elephants for their ivory tusks. Sheldrick said it would be economic sabotage if Kenya doesn't prevent poaching deaths, because of the tourism it will lose.

If you're sick of punching in a passcode to keep your iPhone secure, one Apple analyst has some good news for you.

Topeka Capital's Brian White became the latest Apple rumormonger to talk up fingerprinting technology may be coming to the iPhone 5S, Business Insider reports. "Our research suggests that users will simply place their finger on the home key of the iPhone 5S and this will automatically unlock the device, nullifying the need to enter a four-character Apple ID Password," White says.

If this James Bond fantasy sounds familiar, it should. This rumor has been floating around for quite a while, since Apple bought security firm AuthenTec in July 2012. AuthenTec has done a good deal of research on fingerprinting technology, and Apple's purchase of the company stipulated that AuthenTec was no longer allowed to license out its technologies to other companies, leading many to believe that Apple is making it an exclusive feature of its products.
