Police Dog Pays Respects At Fallen Officer’s Funeral

A photo of a police dog who lost his partner is making rounds across the internet this week, after the animal paid his respects at the funeral.


Officer Jason Ellis was laid to rest on Thursday seven years to the day after he took the oath to join law enforcement; an investigation into his death is still ongoing after fellow officers say he was ambushed while picking up debris off an exit on the Bluegrass Parkway. Ellis, who died from several gunshot wounds, didn’t have his dog with him at the time. He worked for the city of Bardstown, which isn’t far from WebProNews headquarters in Lexington.


The funeral drew hundreds, including officers from all over the country who showed up to pay their respects.


Versailles Lt. Daniel Clark was amazed at the turnout, saying that one “officer drove 600 miles to be here today. He’s out of Pennsylvania…that shows the dedication of the officers to each other, that you would have somebody come that far.”


Ellis’ canine companion, Figo, has been a focus of local media as he mourned the loss of his friend after the tragic shooting. He has been retired from the force and will be adopted by Ellis’ family; the slain officer left behind a young wife and two young sons.
